Hurry! Get Sod Fresno at its best!

By Ariana Rhew

Setting up your brand-new sod lawn is fairly simple. Sod will need to be laid on dry dirt the same day of when it is delivered. When temperature conditions are over 80 water the ground the day before to reduce the soil temperature. Be careful not to over water to be sure that you or the installers are not doing the job in the mud. Shortly after the sod is placed the first watering will need to soak the sod and also moisten the soil. Pretty much all you do then is water frequently and stay off. Continue to keep the lawn moist consistently, preferably by constant quick sprinklings. Water twice a day at 8AM and 1PM (morning hours and early afternoon) if the tempuratures are under 95. The sprinkling process should be repeated 3 times a day during the hottest months of the season, 95 plus, at approximately 8 AM, 11AM and 1PM each day. DON'T LET THE LAWN DRY OUT!!! Remember the key is to KEEP IT MOIST, NOT SOAKED. Sinking causes algae and fungus.

Watering is ideal if done during early morning hours, Three or four am, when sunlight and heat cannot cause excessive evaporation. After your lawn becomes established it will take approximately 1 inches of water every week, inch alternate day, during the heat of the summer time. Spring and fall may only require a couple of times weekly watering according to weather conditions. Cut water back during the winter season, occasionally your lawn is only going to require watering once or twice a month, depending on weather conditions. The soil must be condensed through when watered. Water should penetrate no less than 6 inches into the soil to ensure strong rooting. When your lawn requires water it will eventually turn from bright green to blue or gray-green.

Commercial fertilizer should be applied just before your laying the sod at a rate of 1 lb. per 150 Sq. Ft. This use of fertilizer ought to provide the nutrients to get the sod a healthy start. An extra use of fertilizer must be applied all over again every 6 to 8 weeks. We propose an all purpose fertilizer like triple 15 or 16. Lawns ordinarily do not need feeding during Dec. or Jan. Remember when you notice a lawn that looks great its because the owner has been doing quick and easy things with consistency, proper watering, mowing, fertilizing and weed control.

A different sod lawn should be mowed for the first time between 10-14 days. Delaying the first cutting permits a lot of shading, blade widening and possible sunburn. Set your lawn mower at its maximum setting, lowering a setting each mowing until the lawn is cut at 2 inches. Never remove more that 1/3 of the blade length at any mowing. Weekly mowing is a must throughout the growing season. Lawnmower blades should always be kept sharp to stop bruised and torn grass which develops unsightly white blade tops.

Weeds will appear in your new lawn. They come from seeds which may have lain dormant in your yard or which have been carried in by wind or birds. These weeds can best be controlled by growing good healthy grass. Grass which is well watered, mowed, and well fertilized provides an excessive amount of competition for weed plants to achieve any stronghold. However there are chemical remedies which will be able to help whenever your lawn has matured, usually after 3 mowings. Weed -B-Gon for broad leaf and Weed-hoe for grassy weeds. Pre-emergent is necessary to maintain crabgrass, spurge and approximately 35 other weeds from your lawn. Treatment should be applied the primary part of February and again in mid May on a yearly basis. In case your lawn ever become damaged or have bare spots, reseed or sod immediately to stop competing weed growth from becoming established.
